Bordoibam Bilmukh Bird Sanctuary
A magnificent bird sanctuary located in Lakhimpur, the Bordoibam Bilmukh Bird Sanctuary with several varieties of birds is a paradise for bird lovers. The green landscape and the variety of birds at view here make it one of the beautiful bird sanctuaries to visit. The sanctuary is also the breeding ground of large Whistling Teal.Location of the Sanctuary
Bordoibam Bilmukh Wildlife Sanctuary falls in the Dhemaji district. Located on the northern bank of mighty Brahmaputra, the sanctuary is controlled by the Divisional Forest Officer Western Assam Wildlife Division. The sanctuary covers an area of 11.25 sq kms and was formed after the great earthquake of 1950 when the Subansiri River changed its course.Climate in the Santuary
The sanctuary experiences moist tropical climate with and receives about 2000mm rainfall every year. It has an altitude of 90-95 m above sea level. The average minimum and maximum temperatures are 7°C to 35 °C respectively.Flora and Fauna in the Sanctuary
Bordoibam Bilmukh Wildlife Sanctuary has varied flora and fauna. The vegetation of the sanctuary comprises of flooded valley grassland and wetland. The geographical location of Lakhimpur is a suitable location for a large number of migratory as well as residential birds and as such there are different species of birds found in the sanctuary. As many as 24 species of birds are found in the sanctuary varying from large Whistling Teal, lesser adjutant stork, kingfisher, pheasant tailed jacana, black headed gull, Indian River tern, white wagtail, purple moorhen, to black headed oriole and so on. Apart from that, different species of indigenous fishes and frogs could also be seen here. Animals like fishing cat, porcupine, hog deer, otters etc are also found in the sanctuary. The sanctuary could be visited round the year but a visit from December to February would be more fruitful when one can watch a large number of migratory birds here.How to reach the sanctuary
